EHS Engineer
Role Summary
Purpose and Responsibility of the Position:
The Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Engineer position is responsible for managing, implementing, and administering standardized EHS processes to ensure compliance to federal, state, and local regulations as well as Corporate Policies and Procedures. The EHS Engineer is expected to contribute to the achievement of world-class status through the elimination of occupational injuries/illnesses, property damage, and environmental impacts. This position will specifically focus on improving and safeguarding the health and safety of all employees, ensuring compliance, supporting World Class Manufacturing (WCM) activities, Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001), and Safety Management System (ISO 45001).
The EHS Engineer is responsible to ensure that the Customer, People, and Investor goals are balanced and met.
Key Responsibilities
Essential Functions of the Position:
- Make studies and analyses of industrial accident causes and hazards to health for use by company personnel and outside agencies.
- Formulate general safety permits, policies and procedures to be followed by company or plant personnel in compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations.
- Consult with all departments on design and use of equipment, shops, fire prevention and Environmental, Health, and Safety program.
- Inspect or tour organization facilities to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards and recommends corrective or preventative measures where indicated.
- Report on the performance of the Environmental Management System, chairs management review of the Environmental Management System as a basis for Continuous Improvement.
- Report on the performance of the Health and Safety Management System, chairs Health and Safety management review as a basis for continuous improvement.
- Participate in the investigation of accidents and injuries and cooperates in the preparation of material and evidence for organization use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.
- Devise, supervise, and coordinate training programs or media which will increase proficiency in safe practices and promote safety and environmental consciousness.
- Prepare and arrange safety exhibits and material for display, promotional work, industry conferences and exhibitions.
- Coordinate all environmental compliance issues
- Maintain and oversee company’s ISO 14001 & ISO 45001 program and standard, acting as plant Lead Auditor.
- Maintain safety files and records.
- Facilitate safety meetings.
- Schedule/Coordinate third party audit registration.
- Verify, maintain & follow up on both internal & external corrective actions and monitor/follow up on continuous improvement activities.
- Oversee consultant activities as needed and coordinate certification audits.
- Perform other duties as required.
Key Qualifications/Requirements
Position Requirements:
Education and/or Experience
- Bachelor’s (BS or BA) Degree in Environmental Health and Safety.
- Requires 2+ years of experience in EHS position in a manufacturing environment.
- Requires certification in ISO 14001, ISO 45001, or ability to obtain certification within six months of being hired.
- Requires experience in Title V air permits.
- Requires strong computer skills in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Communication Skills
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, OSHA, EPA, safety certifications and other regulatory requirements.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and customers.
- Interact effectively at all levels within the organization.
Mathematical Skills
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Physical Demands / Work Environment
- Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, books, small parts; driving an automobile, etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
- Must be able to work flex time in order to cover all three shifts.
- Office Environment: 40% sitting at desk, 10% filing, 30% walking
